Dear reader,

I wanted to share some thoughts on my recent experience at the IDFA Shaping Bonds program.

What is Shaping Bonds?

Shaping Bonds is a segment of IDFA that focuses on the connections between art, science, and technology. It brings together creators from various fields to showcase projects that explore how different disciplines can come together to tell compelling stories. The program emphasizes collaboration and innovation, providing a platform for artists and filmmakers to present works that challenge traditional boundaries.

My Contribution: 'Seeing Quintuple'

I had the privilege of presenting my project, Seeing Quintuple, during the festival. Seeing Quintuple is a multidisciplinary installation inspired by gravitational lensing observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. It's a concept where the light from a distant galaxy is magnified by the gravitational field of a foreground galaxy, creating multiple images of the same object. The project mirrors this phenomenon by giving rise to five distinct collaborations, each linked to a different medium: text, sign language, sculpture, virtual reality, and installation.

This iteration of Seeing Quintuple focuses on the stars Porrima, Minelauva, and Spica. Porrima, scripted by André Lourenço and voiced by Angelo Custódio, reflects on the binary essence of the Porrima star system, mirroring the delicate balance between solitude and connection. Minelauva, developed in collaboration with Giulia Principe, is a virtual reality experience that allows the audience to embody the star’s journey through its various life stages—from nebula to white dwarf—while its shifting luminosity is transformed into a pulsating sonic composition that echoes its rhythmic fluctuations. Spica, in collaboration with Mathilde Renault, reflects the duality and convergence of opposites symbolized by this double-star system. The intricate dance of its stars mirrors the interconnectedness of various artistic mediums, illustrating how their gravitational pull shapes their evolution.

The Experience at IDFA

I also had the pleasure of attending Symbiosis. This multisensory journey delved into the intricate relationships between humans and nature, prompting deep reflection on our role within the natural world.   It served as a poignant reminder of our interconnectedness with the environment and the importance of fostering a harmonious relationship with it.

At the same time, a film about The Butterfly Effect by Mathilde Renault — for which I composed a sound piece based on meteorite data — was also screened.

Overall, it was a truly special experience. The team was incredibly welcoming, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share these projects in such a beautiful place.

Thank you to Wotienke for the invitation, and to everyone who came by and supported the work!

Thanks for reading ★
